JEFFERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) – First responders across Jefferson County are honoring the life and legacy of Chief Jay Ray Walker, a longtime rescue squad leader and dedicated firefighter who passed away Sunday morning.
Walker served with the Jefferson County Rescue Squad for more than four decades and was a lifetime member of the Dandridge Fire Department. His death prompted an outpouring of tributes from emergency service agencies throughout the county.
In a statement, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said it was saddened to learn of Walker’s passing, noting that he served the rescue squad for more than 40 years and devoted much of his life to public service.
The Dandridge Police Department also shared condolences, describing Walker as a community servant who consistently answered the call when residents needed help. The department praised his dedication, leadership, and commitment to helping others throughout his career.
The Jefferson County Rescue Squad called Walker a “true leader, mentor, and friend,” saying his legacy of service to the citizens of Jefferson County will never be forgotten. Officials said he faithfully served the organization for more than 40 years and played a significant role in its mission of protecting and assisting the community.
Emergency officials say funeral arrangements are still being finalized and will be announced once details become available.
The cause of Walker’s death has not been released.
Those who worked alongside him say his impact on the rescue squad, fire service, and Jefferson County community will be felt for generations to come.
