MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Blount County Board of Education and Director of Schools Justin Ridge announced the immediate resignation of District 7 board member Randi Earley Howard following an unexpected conflict of interest.
According to a joint statement released by school leadership on Friday, Howard’s employer determined that her position on the school board created a conflict with her regular employment. Officials emphasized that the decision was made independently by her employer and did not stem from any disciplinary actions or policy violations within Blount County Schools or the Board of Education.
Name to Stay on August Ballot
Despite her immediate departure, the Blount County Election Commission confirmed that Howard’s name will still appear on the upcoming August 6 ballot because state deadlines for ballot changes have already passed.
To properly fill the vacancy, a special election for the District 7 seat will be scheduled and held as part of the broader November 3 election lineup. School officials stated they are working closely with the election commission to ensure the transition and voting processes strictly adhere to Tennessee state law.
District Commends Service
School leaders expressed their gratitude for Howard’s contributions to local education during her tenure on the board.
“We appreciate Mrs. Howard’s service to the students, families, employees, and taxpayers of Blount County during her time on the Board. She has demonstrated a sincere commitment to public education and to the success of our school system,” the joint statement reads. “While we are disappointed to see Mrs. Howard step away from public service, we respect her decision and thank her for handling this matter with professionalism and integrity.”
