Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – A healthy newborn was safely surrendered at the Safe Haven Baby Box located at Knoxville Fire Department Station 17 on Western Avenue, according to city fire officials.
The surrender occurred on the evening of October 20, when firefighters received an automated alert indicating an infant had been placed inside the secure Safe Haven Baby Box. First responders immediately opened the climate-controlled compartment and found a newborn who appeared to be in excellent health.
Firefighters conducted an initial evaluation at the station before transporting the infant to a local hospital for a comprehensive medical examination. The baby is now under the care of hospital staff.
Knoxville Fire Department officials said this marks the third infant safely surrendered through the Safe Haven Baby Box at Station 17.
Tennessee’s Safe Haven law allows a parent or legal guardian to anonymously surrender a newborn up to 45 days old at designated facilities, including approved Safe Haven Baby Boxes, without fear of prosecution, provided the child has not been harmed.
The boxes are designed to provide a secure, climate-controlled environment for infants while immediately notifying first responders when a baby is placed inside. Officials say the technology helps ensure newborns receive prompt medical attention and a safe transition into care.
“The Safe Haven Baby Box exists for moments like this,” Knoxville Fire Department officials said in a statement. “Thanks to this technology, the newborn is safe and in good hands.”
The department also expressed gratitude to the Craig family for helping make the Station 17 Baby Box possible through their donation and support. Fire officials additionally thanked Safe Haven Baby Boxes, hospital personnel, and first responders for their efforts in protecting the health and safety of the infant.
The Safe Haven Baby Box remains available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at Fire Station 17, located at 4804 Western Avenue.
