Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – Rural Metro Fire is investigating a house fire in East Knox County that claimed the lives of two pets Sunday morning.
Firefighters were called to a home in the 7500 block of Mary Lay Lane around 10:30 a.m. Crews arrived quickly and were able to contain the fire to the kitchen area, preventing it from spreading further throughout the residence.
Despite the fire being largely confined to the kitchen, officials said the remainder of the home sustained smoke damage.
No human injuries were reported. However, Rural Metro Fire confirmed that two pets died as a result of the incident.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
In the wake of the incident, Rural Metro is reminding residents to use caution when cooking and to never leave cooking appliances turned on and unattended.
