NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — Dolly Parton died today (Tuesday) at the age of 80 after a brief battle with cancer, according to a statement released by her team.
Parton passed away at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville while surrounded by loved ones.
“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” Team Dolly said in a statement.
The announcement provides the first official cause connected to the death of the beloved entertainer, who spent more than seven decades as one of the most recognizable and influential figures in music, entertainment, and philanthropy.
Remembering a Life of Service
In its statement, Parton’s team emphasized not only her musical accomplishments but also her dedication to helping others.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched,” the statement said.
Team Dolly highlighted two of her most significant contributions outside of music:
- The Imagination Library, which has provided hundreds of millions of books to children around the world.

Parton’s nephew, Brian Seaver, announced her passing on behalf of the Parton and Owens families.
Seaver remembered his aunt as someone who created opportunities and happiness for people everywhere.
“Dolly was a farmer, just like her daddy,” Seaver said. “He farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness.”
He said family members and those entrusted with preserving Parton’s legacy will continue working to ensure her influence endures for future generations.

In an interview with People Magazine, she said she had been dealing with health issues that she had neglected while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean.
