KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WOKI / WVLT) — The Knoxville Police Department is reminding residents to take simple precautions to protect themselves from vehicle burglaries after several recent break-ins resulted in firearms being stolen.
According to KPD, officers have received three reports of vehicle burglaries since August 3, with a total of four firearms stolen during those incidents.
Police say investigators believe all three vehicles were likely left unlocked, making them easy targets for thieves.
The department emphasized that taking a few basic security measures can significantly reduce the risk of becoming a victim.

The recent incidents have raised concerns because firearms left inside vehicles can end up in the hands of criminals when stolen.
KPD continues to encourage gun owners to avoid leaving firearms in unattended vehicles whenever possible and to properly secure them if they must be stored inside a vehicle.

To help prevent vehicle burglaries, Knoxville Police recommend:
- Always lock your vehicle.
- Take your keys with you and fully secure your vehicle whenever it is unattended.
- Remove valuables from sight or safely secure them.
- Never leave firearms unsecured inside a vehicle.
- Park in well-lit areas whenever possible.
Police say criminals often look for easy opportunities, such as unlocked vehicles or visible valuables.

KPD says even simple actions can greatly reduce the likelihood of theft.
“By taking these small steps, you can greatly reduce the possibility of falling victim to a car burglary,” the department said.
