Blount County, Tenn. (WVLT) — A motorcyclist was killed after colliding with a deer on the Tail of the Dragon, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
The crash happened around 12:30 p.m. Thursday along the مشهور stretch of U.S. Highway 129. Troopers said 52-year-old Jeremy Gambrell was riding his motorcycle when a deer crossed into his path, leading to the crash.
Authorities said Gambrell died as a result of the collision. The incident marks the second deadly crash reported on the Tail of the Dragon in the past two weeks.
The roadway, known for its 318 curves over 11 miles, attracts motorcyclists and sports car drivers from across the country. However, it also averages around 100 crashes each year.
Troopers say aggressive driving and unsafe passing are major factors in many of those crashes. Officials are increasing patrols in the area in an effort to reduce dangerous behavior.
Emergency response is also a challenge along the mountain roadway. It can take up to an hour for ambulances to reach crash scenes, and cell phone service is often unavailable.
Officials and locals urge drivers to use caution, avoid riding beyond their limits, and allow faster traffic to pass when it is safe.
