NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Story Courtesy of WVLT / WSMV) – A last-minute voucher amendment was shot down in the Senate on Wednesday, April 22.
Tennessee lawmakers in the Senate failed to pass HB 1881/ SB 1585.
The bill is still up for debate as it was placed on the regular calendar for both the House and the Senate.
If it passes, opponents of the bill believe it would divert millions more away from K-12 public schools in Nashville, Memphis, Chattanooga, and Knoxville.
The bill, as introduced, would delete “references to an obsolete reporting requirement imposed on the department of education regarding the implementation of certain literary practices, standards, and requirements.”
Recently, Tennessee lawmakers approved an increase in the number of scholarships within the state’s school voucher program to 35,000 on April 16.
That legislation is now headed to Governor Bill Lee’s desk for his signature.
