TBI Asked to Investigate Circumstances Surrounding Corrections Officer’s Stabbing Death

MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn. (Story courtesy of WVLT) -District Attorney General Russell Johnson is asking the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to investigate what led up to a stabbing that left a Morgan County corrections officer dead.

The stabbing happened in February. Officials say inmate Reginald Steed stabbed Officer Dustin Pedigo while officers were performing cell door checks at Morgan County Correctional Complex, a Tennessee Department of Corrections facility.

Johnson said Senator Ken Yager brought up concerns during a recent Senate Finance Committee hearing that inmates could jam cell door locks so they could open them. Johnson said Commissioner Frank Strada admitted that the state Department of Corrections has known about the issue since 2013, but had not replaced the doors or locking mechanisms in any of the cells at the Morgan County Correctional Complex in the last 13 years.

Steed is currently serving a 27-year sentence for several charges, including aggravated assault.

The next meeting of the grand jury is May 26.
