Roane County, TN (Story courtesy of WVLT) – Authorities are warning East Tennesseans about a new court scam.
McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy said the scam features a new format with a QR code asking residents to settle an unpaid traffic violation balance.
The scam claims to be a final notification asks for all outstanding tolls, fines, civil penalties, administrative fees and court costs or to appear in court for a hearing.
It also claims that failure to act will result in several actions, including a driver’s license suspension and possible impacts to credit scores.
The scam provides a QR code for people to settle an unpaid balance, which Guy emphasized that nobody should scan.
“Don’t fall victim to it!,” Guy said. “Don’t scan the code! Don’t respond in any way!”
The Roane County Sheriff’s Office said anyone looking to verify a notice should call the court or agency directly instead of the information on the notice.
