Knoxville, TN (WOKI / KFD) – This morning at 6:12 a.m., the Knox County Emergency Communications District received a 911 call reporting that a hoverboard was on fire inside an apartment at 604 Waterfront Drive.
The caller reported that he had attempted to extinguish the fire with an extinguisher but was unable to control the fire.
On the arrival of the first Knoxville Fire Department units, light smoke was reported coming from an apartment on the third floor. KFD crews quickly entered the unit and located a hoverboard/lithium battery fire. KFD contained and extinguished the fire within 3 minutes of arrival.
Three adults occupied the apartment: one female and two males.
The occupants stated that the smoke alarm woke them up, and they discovered the fire. They attempted to use an extinguisher to put out the fire, but the smoke conditions forced them out of the apartment.
No other apartments were affected by the fire.
No injuries were reported.
KFD investigators determined that the cause was related to charging the hoverboard’s lithium battery.

Lithium-ion batteries are used in various devices, commonly powering cell phones, laptops, tablets, power tools, electric cars, and e-micromobility devices such as e-bikes and e-scooters. Lithium-ion batteries store a large amount of energy and can pose a threat if not treated properly.
Given the nascent industry and the lack of federal standards for e-micromobility products, a number of the batteries in these devices are defective or become so, and can overheat, catch fire, or explode. In 2023 alone, there were 268 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, many of which involved e-bikes.
General Safety Tips:
· When purchasing devices, look for the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) Mark. The UL mark shows that the product has been tested to nationally recognized safety standards.
· Follow the device manufacturer’s instructions for charging and storage. Always use the manufacturer’s cord and power adapter made specifically for the device.
· When purchasing a new battery, buy the manufacturer’s battery that is compatible with your device. Do not seek alternative battery options.
