Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Knoxville engineers are working with the Tennessee Department of Transportation to update three traffic signals on Clinton Highway as the busy road sees thousands of cars each day and growing congestion from the city’s population increase.
The upgrades target intersections around Crown Point Plaza, including Schaad Road and Old Callahan Drive, where traffic backups are common.
Transportation Engineer Chief Karen McKeehan says the city is installing a new video detection system to replace the original traffic detection equipment.
The new system uses cameras to monitor traffic flow and McKeehan says the cameras will not record license plates or personal information.
Engineers will be able to see the number of cars, people, bikes and peak times which helps them manage traffic better.
A TDOT contractor will install the video system on Clinton Highway and the process is scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.
The city is also looking to bring the video detection system to Magnolia Avenue and is considering other intersections for installation.
