Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – The cause of yesterday’s (Monday) fire at Spring Meadows Apartments was determined to be due to unattended cooking on the stove top. Officials say cooking fires remain the most common cause of home fires in the nation and locally.
The Knox County Emergency Communications District received a 911 call reporting smoke coming from a second-floor apartment on 3112 Washington Ridge Way in the Spring Meadows Apartment complex. The caller stated a male was possibly trapped in the apartment.
On the arrival of the first KFD units, a fire was located in Building 3112 on the second floor. Crews reported they were assisting a male who was injured in the apartment. The Injured male was transferred to additional KFD crews and an AMR ambulance crew. The male was evaluated and transported to a local hospital.
Quick-acting building management and maintenance personnel made a quick attempt to rescue the male and extinguish the fire with no avail before KFD’s arrival.
KFD crews made a quick attack on the fire and extinguished it within minutes of their arrival.
Smoke alarms were activated before KFD’s arrival.
9 People and several animals were displaced from 4 units in the building. The American Red Cross is assisting them this evening.
The fire-damaged apartment is uninhabitable. The other units in the building have sustained varying degrees of smoke and water damage.
