Knoxville Police Department Homicide Unit detectives have launched an investigation into the death of 60-year-old Brian Overby.
At just before 10 p.m. on September 7, 2025, KPD officers were dispatched to the Broadway Shopping Center, where Overby was located. Overby had sustained numerous injuries to his head and face and was bleeding from a laceration on top of his head. Overby, believed to be homeless, did not report how he was injured and was transported by the responding KPD officer to the UT Medical Center for treatment.
After arriving at UTMC, Overby’s condition deteriorated, and he remained hospitalized until he died in early October. Following examination by Regional Forensic Center personnel, it was determined that Overby’s death was the result of blunt force trauma likely caused by an assault.
KPD detectives are actively investigating Overby’s death and have conducted numerous related interviews. The circumstances surrounding the suspected assault and that led to Overby’s death have not been determined. Efforts to locate and gather potential evidence remain ongoing.
