Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The Knoxville Police Department Wednesday announcing the names of three new horses in its mounted patrol unit.
Knoxville Downtown Alliance purchased the horses to expand the unit’s presence in the downtown and Old City areas and at special events.
After receiving more than 4,500 submissions from the community, a committee of representatives from Knoxville Downtown Alliance and KPD selected the final names: Ranger, Cormac, and Summitt.
Per a release from KPD, Ranger’s name was chosen because the committee felt like it fit. KPD said Cormac’s name honors the author Cormac McCarthy and his ties to Knoxville while Summit was chosen in honor of legendary Lady Vols basketball coach Pat Summit. KPD added that Summitt was one of the most popular names submitted by community members.
Community members who submitted the winning names received a prize pack.
