Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Knoxville Crime Laboratory has been named one of the top forensic laboratories in the world.
The lab received the Maximus Award from Project FORESIGHT, an international benchmarking program that evaluates forensic lab performance. The honor was announced during the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors Annual Symposium in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Only 15 labs worldwide were selected for the award during the 2024–2025 reporting cycle, out of 184 participating laboratories. The recognition is reserved for facilities operating at 90 percent or greater efficiency, demonstrating excellence in operations, scientific work, and financial management.
During the 2024–2025 fiscal year, the Knoxville lab received 17,988 testing requests across multiple forensic disciplines. Scientists completed 19,698 requests, reducing the lab’s overall case inventory by nearly 39 percent.
“This award confirms the dedication of TBI Crime Laboratory employees to public service, responsible resource management, and a commitment to excellence,” said Mike Lyttle, Assistant Director of TBI’s Forensic Services Division.
Project FORESIGHT, managed by West Virginia University, has been considered the gold standard in forensic lab analytics since its creation in 2008. The program helps laboratories around the world improve efficiency, manage caseloads, and enhance service delivery.
