Knoxville, TN (WOKI) – With heavy hearts and profound sadness, the Knoxville Police Department announces the passing of Detective Mel Pierce.
In 2025, Pierce was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, which he bravely fought until his passing on the morning of April 2, 2026.
“This is an immense loss for our department and our city,” Chief Paul Noel said. “Mel was an amazing man and police officer and a joy to be around. From the time he received his cancer diagnosis, he showed incredible grace and resilience, remained positive, and continued to uplift those around him. We ask everyone to keep Mel’s family, his KPD family and all who loved him in their prayers.”
Pierce, 53, was sworn in as a KPD police officer in July 1996. During his career, he served as a patrol officer in the East District and a School Resource Officer before transitioning to the Investigations Bureau in the early 2000s. In the Investigations Bureau, he shined as a skilled detective that brought justice to countless victims in Knoxville and beyond.
Pierce impacted untold lives during his 30-year career. He was nominated for and awarded Officer of the Month several times and was recognized by police departments across the state for his investigative efforts with the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Most recently, Pierce served as a detective in the Property Crimes Unit, where he specialized in theft and larceny investigations.
Funeral services for Detective Pierce have not been finalized at this time.
