Monroe Co, TN (WOKI/WVLT) – Five people, including two inmates, are facing charges after a drug bust on school property in Monroe County.
Sheriff Tommy Jones says an investigation began March 9 after a staff member at Sequoyah High School notified a school resource officer about suspicious items hidden under a shed. The items were found to include tobacco products, marijuana and prescription medications.
Surveillance footage showed that two people, identified as Mitchell Cook and Sierra Boggess, had dropped off the items on school grounds on March 8. Additional reviewing determined that on March 6, an inmate, identified as Elijah Pressley, got out of a transportation van that traveled from the Monroe County Justice Center to the high school for an inmate welding class taught by Cleveland State Community College. He walked to the shed, retrieved the hidden items and concealed them in his clothes.
Cook and Boggess were found in Gatlinburg using Flock camera technology and another inmate, Kevin Cook, and Nicholas Boggess were also arrested during the investigation.
Jones says the inmate welding class, which was held two evenings a week, has been postponed after the incident and will not be returning to the high school.
