Tennessee (WOKI) – A bill calling for the state to accept Federal funding is up for discussion in both the House and Senate for Summer Food Programs for children.
It provides grocery money for low-income families when school meals are not available during the summer.
Governor Bill Lee says he would sign the bill into action if it does reach his desk.
Tennessee participated in the program in 2024 but opted out of last year because of the high cost to the program. States are required to match 50% of the food. The Research Action Center says the program provided benefits to nearly 700,000 children across our state in 2024.
