Tennessee (WOKI / WVLT) – An executive order from President Donald Trump late last year started the process of reclassifying marijuana as a less dangerous drug in the United States.
Here in Tennessee, it could pave the way for the legalization of medical marijuana in the state.
The topic has been argued over for many years with many against it citing the federal drug laws as the reason
Now Representative William Lamberth, one of the biggest players in Nashville, says adjustments to federal drug laws could change the playing field in the Volunteer State.
There’s no specific timeline for federally rescheduling marijuana but it would allow it to be legally used as a prescription from a doctor.
Right now, some Tennessee lawmakers are pushing the Pot for Potholes Act. The proposal would legalize marijuana for adults and place a 15% tax on cannabis sales to help fund bridge and road repairs.
Supporters say the idea would bring in millions of dollars for infrastructure but the bill still faces a major uphill battle at the State Capitol. It is expected to be introduced at the Tennessee’s Capitol next week.
