JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (Story Courtesy of WVLT) – The collection of Carson-Newman University students, staff and chaperones stuck in the Middle East as the United States and Israel continue to trade blows with Iran has moved into Egypt.
In an updated statement shared Tuesday, a representative for Carson-Newman said the group had moved on from Jerusalem.
“The Carson-Newman team of students and faculty has departed Jerusalem and is now in Egypt. Plans continue to be fluid as to their specific arrangements,” a statement from the university said. “Obviously, many residents and visitors in that area of the world are rearranging their plans. As a result, airline scheduling of flights is undergoing frequent changes.”
“The decision was made to begin making arrangements to forego the remainder of the planned dig and prepare for the team to leave the country,” the statement said. “The escalation began before that could be implemented.”
The university went on to say how grateful it was for the staff and students.
Thousands of flights have seen cancellations since the U.S. and Israel began strikes on Iran. At this time, there’s no word on when the group will be back stateside.
