The Knox County Sheriff’s Office warning about a scam targeting victims of domestic violence and other crimes.
A victim reported receiving suspicious phone calls, first a call claiming her abuser was being released from jail. Shortly after, she received a second call stating that she needed to send $800 via Cash App or a similar app to pay for a GPS monitor. The caller falsely claimed the victim was responsible for covering that cost.
KCSO says victims are never responsible for paying for monitoring devices or services related to an offender’s release.
She paid the money by was able to contact her bank and stop the transaction.
KCSO says law enforcement or victim services will never ask you to send money through payment apps, gift cards, or wire transfers.
Never send money, hang up and contact authorities.
