BLOUNT COUNTY, Tenn. (Story courtesy of WVLT) – Blount County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested and charged a 17-year-old William Blount High School student who brought a gun onto the school’s campus Monday. That student is facing weapons charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
In a Tuesday morning news release, BCSO said a parent of a William Blount student reached out to say they had a picture of another student with a gun tucked into their waistband.
That tip came around 6:30 p.m., BCSO said, and prompted deputies to look into the student in the picture.
“The student who reported this did the right thing,” Sheriff James Lee Berrong said. “This is what we want students to do – if they see something, say something. Please don’t hesitate to report something of his nature. We are on the same page as administrators with Blount County Schools – keeping guns out of our schools is paramount.”
Justin Ridge, Bount County director of schools, and Derrick Crabtree, William Blount’s principal, released a statement via email Tuesday morning. The email said the following went to parents Monday night:
Deputies took the student into custody, charging them with carrying weapons on school property and possession of a handgun by a juvenile.
