KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Story Courtesy of WVLT) – Deer season is under way, and the Tennessee Highway Patrol said drivers should be extra cautious on roadways after more than 8,000 deer-related crashes were reported statewide in 2024.
The THP report said that 465 people were injured and five people died last year in deer-related crashes. Officials said most of the crashes occurred on rural roads where limited lighting and higher speeds made it harder for motorists to avoid deer.
Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Joshua Buckner said, “slow your speed down and brake if you can. If you see one you are going to see multiple.”
In East Tennessee, the THP identified Hamilton, Sullivan and Washington counties as having the highest counts of deer-related crashes in 2024. A THP map highlights Roane and Loudon counties as local hotspots.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, use high beams when appropriate, and remain alert in areas where deer are common — especially at dawn and dusk, when animals are most active.
