Henley Street Bridge is usually always lit up in Knoxville. However, anyone who drove by the bridge Monday night may have seen the color purple.
The overpass is purple to honor National Epilepsy Awareness Month. Epilepsy is a brain disorder that causes frequent seizures.
“This is awareness right here,” said Monika Hancock, executive director of the East Tennessee Epilepsy Foundation. “This is bringing awareness to our organization about what we do so we can help more clients and more people that live with epilepsy.”
The East Tennessee Epilepsy Foundation said anything helps bring awareness to a disability that needs more support.
“A bridge is how you get from A to B,” said Liam Brown, a member of East Tennessee Epilepsy Foundation. “Yeah you have to go through some tough times, but when it’s lit up and purple, it means that people are walking with you.”
Brown suffers from epilepsy himself and has multiple seizures a month.
Over 80,000 people live with epilepsy in East Tennessee, and the East Tennessee Epilepsy Foundation works to help people struggling with the disorder.
