ALCOA, Tenn. (WVLT) – Travelers are trying to figure out how their flights will be impacted as airline schedules are being cut.
The FAA has announced it is reducing the number of flights as the air traffic control staffing shortage and government shutdown continue.
40 of the busiest airports will see a cut in flights starting on Friday. McGhee Tyson is not on that list but will be impacted by ripple effects from Atlanta, Charlotte and other major airports.
Air traffic controllers have been working unpaid since the shutdown began on Oct. 1.
Airlines are making adjustments after the FAA ordered airlines to cut their flight schedules by 10%. This is because of a lack of air traffic control staff and the government shutdown.
“It’s a bummer. It’s, you know, people, this is the time of year where we’re all traveling to see family and friends and we want to be able to do that safely and peacefully and easily,” said Lisa Kopp.
Kopp came in from D.C. She said getting into McGhee Tyson was easy, but she’s worried about flying back with the cuts happening.
Scott Baker said he hopes this change doesn’t last long.
“It’s understandable considering what’s going on. It’s just, for me, coming in the holiday season, it saddens me that, you know, we got air traffic controllers and TSA agents that are working for free,” said Baker, a Maryville resident.
Right now, McGhee Tyson Airport staff said it’s hard to predict if there will be an impact, but they said they want travelers to stay alert.
- American Airlines reports long international flights won’t be impacted and they’ll re-book or refund travelers.
- Delta Airlines reports long international flights also should be fine. They’ll alert flyers and cancellations or refunds will include “Delta Main Basic fares.”
- For United, hub to hub flights won’t be impacted and they’ll reduce regional and domestic flying not going to the hubs.
- Allegiant reports their flights are not affected right now, but will alert flyers if anything changes.
Travelers said they’re just waiting to see what the changes will actually look like, as their biggest concern is getting through their holiday travels smoothly.
An airport spokesperson said it’s important for travelers to use airline apps to stay updated on what’s happening with their flight.
