Knoxville, TN (WOKI / WVLT) – Thousands of East Tennessee residents are facing uncertainty as funding for critical assistance programs remains frozen due to the ongoing government shutdown.
The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, a vital resource for those struggling with utility bills, is currently unable to provide 2026 aid, leaving many vulnerable.
The Community Action Committee in Knoxville, which administers the program, is feeling the immediate impact.
Officials say warming shelters, which aren’t yet open, may not have enough space when they do.
Last year, there were enough beds for 400 individuals. This year, that number is closer to 200 to 250.
Knoxville Utilities Board offers an emergency heating assistance program called Project Help, but it is entirely dependent on donations which go to CAC.
