Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The Knoxville City Council discussing several topics, including a resolution to allow a traffic study to be done on the Gay Street Bridge.
During Tuesday night’s meeting, the resolution passed and will allow Mayor Indya Kincannon to enter a $96,100 agreement with CDM Smith, Inc. to provide engineering services for the traffic study.
According to the resolution, the survey will evaluate pre- and post-closure traffic data to determine how the bridge’s closure impacts Chapman Highway, Henley Street, James White Parkway and other roads in the area.
Crews have been working on the Gay Street Bridge with plans to reopen to pedestrians and bicyclists by the end of the year, according to the city.
This comes after inspections found defects in the 127-year-old bridge in June 2024, resulting in short-term structural repairs to stabilize the bridge.
All work is set to be completed by April 1, 2026.
