Monroe County, TN (WOKI) The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office details the series of events that led to a man dying while in custody.
Sheriff Tommy Jones says Officer Jimmy Haynes with the Madisonville Police Department stopped on Turnpike Road late Sunday afternoon where bystanders told him the driver of the truck, later identified as 62-year-old Michael Ray Stice, of Madisonville, may be in need of medical treatment.
Haynes asked Stice to step out of the truck, but he refused. Stice later leaned inside the truck behind his seat in an attempt to reach something and concerned for the safety of himself and bystanders, Haynes drew his service weapon and told Stice to show his hands.
Stice ran from the scene when other deputies arrived and chased after him, deploying a stun gun three separate times.
After Stice was handcuffed, deputies noticed his face was turning blue. They began CPR and yellow foam began coming out of his mouth. EMS arrived, and Stice was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
What is believed to be fentanyl and a scale were found in Stice’s truck. Preliminary information indicates Stice may have overdosed.
