Knoxville, TN (WOKI) The Karns community celebrated the blessing Tuesday, September 30 of a Safe Haven Baby Box.
The event marks the opening of the 24th Safe Haven Baby Box in the state of Tennessee, with upwards of 15 boxes now located in the East Tennessee region.
The Safe Haven Baby Box in Karns is located at the Karns Fire Department, 2150 Campbell Station Road in Knoxville.
The boxes act as a way for mothers in crisis to safely and anonymously surrender their infants. They’re often installed at fire departments and hospitals, and automatically lock and keep infants cool or heated in extreme weather.
The boxes also notify medical personnel to respond and care for the baby.
