Nashville, TN (WVLT / WSMV) Children in Tennessee are being exploited at an alarming rate, according to newly released data from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI).
Currently, Tennessee has over 22,000 cases, according to the TBI.
Authorities say it’s a 140% increase since 2020.
“We’re seeing most of all is online enticement of minors using social media apps,” said Andrew Boatman, of the Tennessee Internet Crimes Against Children Unit.
During a press conference on Monday, the TBI raised awareness about the impacts.
In most cases, suspects are using apps like KIK or Snapchat to reach children, which is why agents say it’s important for parents to monitor them.
To keep up with the demand, TBI is hoping to increase staffing levels and lobby to get legislation passed to increase penalties against offenders.
“It’s so important that we continue that work, even as the increase comes, even as we face budget challenges because we stand as the only people who can get in between a sexual predator and a child,” Boatman explained.
