Authorities in New Mexico are still trying to piece together what happened to turn a movie set into a real-life tragedy. Actor Alec Baldwin killed his director of photography - and injured his director - when a prop firearm he had went off. It happened yesterday near Santa Fe, during the filming of the Western "Rust."
Dead is Halyna Hutchins, the movie's D.P., who was 42. Director Joel Souza - age 48 - is hospitalized with his injuries. A rep for Baldwin says the shooting was an accident and involved the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. Baldwin stars in and is producing the movie. The Santa Fe New Mexican newspaper reports he was seen at the sheriff's office in tears - but attempts to get a comment from him failed.
