Austin East Magnet High School Students Will Have New Security Measures Including Metal Detector Wands When They Return to In-Person Classes

Austin-East Magnet High School will begin searching students and using metal detector wands when students return to in-person classes.

Classes are on-line only today but changes going forward.   The school says learning would take place “asynchronously” so students have an opportunity to participate in grade-level class meetings with their advisory classes.  Austin-East’s principal says students will be on a staggered schedule for a 90 minute session tomorrow. Students in the 9th and 10th grade will attend in the morning from 8:30 a.m.-10 a.m. and then will be dismissed to go home. Students in 11th and 12th grade will attend in the afternoon from noon-1:30 p.m. and then will be dismissed to go home.

The school says that students will continue to enter through the Performing Arts wing during arrival and dismissal.

The high school will be implementing the following additional safety measures as students return to the building on tomorrow (Wednesday)

• All students will be searched and wanded by school security upon arrival daily.

• All entrances/exits will be alarmed.

• Personnel will be assigned to appropriate outside locations.

The clear backpack policy will remain in place.
