KCHD Concerned Over Resolution by Knox County Commission to Change the Powers of the Board

Knox County Public Health Director, Dr. Martha Buchanan is concerned with Knox County Commission’s consideration of shifting some regulatory power away from the Department of Health.

Buchanan says, “The Board of Health is a set of health experts and they have the expertise to make decision and to put the decision making power in another body that does not have that knowledge could be challenging.”  She also says she worries about the long term affects of taking the decision making from the experts.

Buchanan says, “Both the Commission and Board of Health want to do what is right for the community but have different ideas of what that looks like.”  She says she trusts her staff’s expertise and years of experience in controlling infections.

She says she’s curious to see how they vote.  They will take up the matter again on Monday, September 28th.
