Rockslide Closes The Spur in GSMNP

A mudslide has closed The Spur in the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The slide happened in the northbound lanes of the Spur between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Monday. The slide was just past the Westgate Resort and covers about 100 feet of both northbound lanes.

A detour is in place for northbound traffic via Little Smoky Road and Beech Branch Road. Larger vehicles are being detoured east of Gatlinburg to Highway 231.

Crews will assess the slide Tuesday and depending on the stability of the slope they could start removing debris to get one lane open. There’s no estimate when they’ll have the roadway cleared.

For more information about temporary road closures, visit the park website at or follow SmokiesRoadsNPS on Twitter.
