Stephen West Put to Death – Vigil Held for Victims

An East Tennessee murderer was put to death by the electric chair Thursday night. 56-year-old Stephen West kidnapped and stabbed to death Wanda and her 15-year-old daughter Sheila Romines in 1986.

He was pronounced dead at 8:27 at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville. Our TV Partner WVLT News’ Justin McDuffie served as an official witness to the execution. McDuffie says, “the warden asked if there were any final words. In the beginning, [West] took a pause seemed like he was about to start sobbing once again. He said God created man and then he said ‘Jesus wept.”

Friends and family of the victim gathered to remember Wanda and Sheila last night. Sheila was a freshman at Anderson County High School when she was killed.

Classmates say Stephen West’s execution finally brought long over due justice. Sheila’s class actually donated her gravestone when she was buried in 1986.
