Mother Charged After Children Found Unresponsive in Bathtub

A Seymour woman is in custody after her baby and toddler were found unresponsive in a bathtub. Officials say the 15-month-old died and the 20-day-old child is in critical condition.

34-year-old Bethanie Carriker was charged with two counts of Aggravated Child Abuse and Neglect. Rescue Crews were called to her home on Green Fern Trail in Seymour Tuesday afternoon.

Carriker was performing CPR when first responders arrived. She’s being held on $1 Million bond and is due in court Wednesday afternoon.

A toddler and a newborn are in the hospital after they were pulled from a bathtub. First Responders got the call of a possible drowning in Seymour around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The mother pulled the babies from the tub before crews arrived. They were rushed to East Tennessee Children’s Hospital. Officials say the children are in Critical Condition.

Neighbors say the family had only been in the house for a year. The CDC says drowning is the second leading cause of children under 4.
