Man Killed After Trying to Stop Domestic Assault

Officials say a man who stepped in to help a woman is dead after a shooting Monday night in Fountain City.

Officials described it as a domestic dispute, but now say 30-year-old John Taylor assaulted his ex-girlfriend and choked her until she was unconscious. Witnesses say another man, Kelton Crawford, stepped up to help the woman when Taylor shot him.

Responding officers found Crawford shot multiple times lying in the front yard of the residence. They rushed him to UT Medical Center where he died. Taylor fled the scene, but was picked up late Monday night.

Taylor was charged with one count of First Degree Murder, Especially Aggravated Kidnapping, and Aggravated Assault (Domestic). He’s currently being held in the Roger D. Wilson Detention Facility on a $625,000 bond.
