Woman Arrested After Police Chase

A Knoxville woman is in custody after an incident that started as an overdose call to University Commons. Officers were called to the parking garage near campus Sunday night for a possible overdose.

Officials say they found 28-year-old Casey Yates passed out behind the wheel. As officers were attempting to remove her from vehicle, police say she woke up, spoke to them and then hit the accelerator and sped off.

Officials say Yates hit an officer with the car as she fled. Another officer spotted her on Cumberland Avenue and initiated the pursuit. She ended up headed the wrong way on I-40. The pursuit ended as she tried to merge onto I-640.

Yates was charged with Aggravated Assault on a Police Officer, Evading Arrest, Reckless Driving and more. Authorities say the officer she hit was not seriously injured.
